Welcome to the Roots of the World Show on Hive Radio NE broadcast from 5 to 6.30pm on Sunday 16th March 2014.
As always there's a broad cross section of world, roots and folk music, or what I call in summary, "roots" music from near and far.
This month the album of the month is from French Occitan group Du Bartas, based in the Languedoc region of southern France.Read more about them by clicking on the link. It's a joyful, and uplifting celebration of Occitan culture, with fabulously infectious rhythms and singing.. The title of the album is "Tant Que Vira" and it's on the Sirventes label, and is available on iTunes and Amazon amongst other retailers.
The area that Occitan culture occupies, also sometimes known as the Pais d'Oc, encompasses parts of southern France, Monaco and parts of northern Italy. Click on the links to find out more about this area's history, the Occitan language and culture.
This month's programme contains lots more. There is music from local band Chloe and the High Tides, great world dance music including from Beninoise songstress Angelique Kidjo from her fabulous new album "Eve"; Kit's pounding electro grooves drawing from the roots of the Caribbean island of Curacao, and a track from Canadian band the Souljazz Orchestra from their highly desirable new album "Inner Fire". We are looking forward to May's Hexham Gathering with a track from Scottish folk force Breabach who play Queen's Hall,Hexham on May 24 as well as saying good bye to English folk duo Spiers and Boden who play Sage Gateshead on March 22nd. In "The Celtic Corner" not only will there be music from Breabach, but you will also be able to hear tracks from the new albums by Patsy Reid, Blazin' Fiddles and Daimh! Moving into April at the Sage, it's the Gateshead International Jazz Festival and Ed Motta brings his Brazilian jazz funk to Roots of the World Show to mark that occasion.. So all in all it's a show that requires you to put in some musical travel.
