Welcome to the Roots of the World Show for April 2014 featuring roots music from near and far: roots, folk and world music.
In the April edition the featured act is Leeds based Latino band Mestisa who are based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. They describe themselves as follows:
"At the heart of Mestisa are Barbara Kempf (Bolivian German family background) on vocals and guitar/charango, Ana Luisa Munoz del Valle, (Chile) on vocals, guitar, cuatro.. Ana and Barbara are currently playing with Mike Sandell from England on bass and percussionist Tenley Martin from the US. Together we are Mestisa".
Of their music they say; "There is a rich tradition of Afro Bolivian Saya, universally played Boleros, Chilean Cuecas, Argentinian Zambas, Mexican Son Jarocho, Peruvian Marineras, as well as traditional Cumbia from Colombia. These mix indigenous pre-colonial traditions with African, Spanish, German, French, Eastern European and Celtic influences. Mestisa is dedicated to playing and educating about this traditional music, but we are just as happy to experiment and reinvent some of these in collaborations with others. We draw on this rich tradition with our own arrangements.
The songs portrait the lives of ordinary folk, their work, their heart felt emotions and trials and tribulations. When these songs are performed in Latin America, people get involved, sing and clap along and take an active part in the performance. Mestisa encourages this kind of audience participation wth brief explanations about the songs. The themes are universal and travel easily across folk traditions and our audiences can relate to these and join in enthusiastically."
